Notts County progressed to the semi-finals of the Buildbase FA Trophy with a comfortable 5-0 win over Aveley on Saturday.

First-half strikes from Jim O’Brien, Tom Crawford and Sam Osborne put the result beyond doubt, before Kyle Wootton and Scott Wilson netted after the break.

Neither side created any chances of note early on, but Notts looked to keep possession and move forward gradually.

They started to force the issue with several corners and half-chances, a nice touch from Kristian Dennis opened space for a shot but Hughes got behind his effort.

Dennis might have put Notts ahead on 20 minutes but he couldn’t control a ball that found him in space and Hughes made yet another save.

All Aveley’s good work was undone on 32 minutes as JIM O’BRIEN’s shot from distance slipped through Hughes’ fingers and in. Notts 1 – 0 Aveley.

They doubled their lead minutes later as TOM CRAWFORD found himself in space and fired beautifully past Hughes and into the bottom-right corner. Notts 2 – 0 Aveley.

Dennis tried to weigh in and find the top-left on 41 minutes after some neat play but his effort from the right of the box went over the bar into an empty Family Stand.

SAM OSBORNE got on the scoresheet just before the break as he ran through the Aveley defence to slot the ball in off the bottom of the left post. Notts 3 – 0 Aveley.

Kristian Dennis nearly made it four in added time but his improvised effort in space fell just wide with the keeper stranded.

KYLE WOOTTON extended the hosts’ advantage to four on the hour mark as Dennis fed him the ball and he took his time before coolly finishing. Notts 4 – 0 Aveley.

New signing SCOTT WILSON ran through and scored with his first touches in a Notts County shirt to make it five just three minutes later. Notts 5 – 0 Aveley.

The five goals didn’t dampen the 530 Aveley supporters’ spirits one bit, as they broke out into the Poznan in the Jimmy Sirrel stand.
